Early Detection Of Cavities
A few great advances have come into dentistry.
1. Laser cavity detection. For years dentists and hygienists have depended on a pointed instrument ( dental explorer) to determine if there is a break in the enamel surface. The patient often heard "it seems to be small- let's watch it". With xrays and clinical judgment the decision was made to either fill, seal or perhaps "watch" the area. A new laser device can measure this. It is a cross between sonar and radar detection although it uses no radiation at all. You will see a digital readout that shows if the cavity has reached a point where it should be treated.
2. Digital xrays- You will now note that your xrays come up on a large computer monitor. With a picture this size, along with some software, we can see far more detail and make a better diagnosis. In addition, this system uses less radiation than the traditional film.
3. Digital cameras- We have standard digital cameras as well as a miniature model that can go in the mouth and project the tooth on the computer monitor. This gives us the ability to see more detail with respect to cavities, fractures and other dental issues.
Using these tools will give you more comprehensive and predictable treatment.
