First Step- Browser Basics

Opening up MS Explorer. Note that it has just undergone an update so some computers will have version 6 and others will have version 7. Explorer comes with Windows but there are two other “browsers” that we will look at later called “Firefox’ and “Opera”. Many people prefer Firefox, especially Mac users.

Searching

Most people today immediate go to Google or Yahoo. Explorer automatically opens with MSN and there is a search bar. If you don’t want that to happen, you can change it we will look at this.

Google details:

Standard Search- most used area

Images- find pictures

Video- all sorts of videos - you need high speed internet- uncensored

News- searches newspapers and online news

Maps- very slick map system- includes satellite views- separate program, called Google Earth has to be downloaded.

Books- several books which are in the public domain are online for reading.

Translate- google has a place where you can do simple translation. Another website that does this is "babelfish" (from the Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy)

It is  http://babelfish.altavista.com/

Plus more we will explore.

How to get the best search: Start with Google- type in the word "help". You will see "Google Help"  On the list you will see all sorts of things that Google does.

Go to "Web Search" and then Search tips.

(There is an older version this that I liked better- it is on my website:

www.myteeth.com/yankee07)

Other options for searching?

Yahoo- type in "help" (no quotes necessary). In the box type in "search" then go to "search tips". Excellent page of information.

Firefox browser and Opera Browser - we will go over these if we have time.

TRICK- back button has a history “button” the small arrow. Watch demo.

Getting the office name registered

Decide on a name. First just go online and look and see if anyone has it.

If you think you have a good one- go to: www.godaddy.com , www.joker.com, www.younamefree.com or others. Search for available name. All you want to do at this time is reserve the name- you do not have to set up a website (unless you are ready for that).
